IR Recognition Systems HandReaders Cut Famed Restaurant's Payroll Time and Costs

CAMPBELL, CALIF. – Sept. 4, 2003 – IR Recognition Systems, the biometric component of Ingersoll-Rand's (IR) Security & Safety Group's Electronic Access Control Division (EACD), today announced that famed Miami Beach restaurant Joe's Stone Crab is saving money and time by using its HandPunch biometric terminals, and labor management software installed by Gatekeeper Business Solutions (GBS) for tracking its 280 employees' attendance. The GBS software then exports a time file directly to CompuPay, a local payroll service, so no manual entry is required for payroll.

The HandPunch eliminates the expenses associated with employee badges and fraud caused by buddy punching. Instead of having to fill out or punch timecards, employees simply place their hands on the HandPunch. It automatically takes a three-dimensional reading of the size and shape of the employee's hand and verifies the user's identity in less than one second. Hand geometry technology is the most commonly used technology for time and attendance and access control according to Frost and Sullivan's "World Biometrics Report 2002."

"We needed to stop buddy-punching," reports Judy Goupee, payroll administrator for Joe's Stone Crab. "We also wanted to improve our timekeeping accuracy. The HandPunch is definitely living up to our expectations. We can do our payroll in no time now. The GBS and CompuPay's systems work especially well with the HandPunch and any problems that arise can be fixed immediately."

The restaurant installed the HandPunch units in October, 2002. They are connected to a Microsoft NT network using the GBS labor management software. Goupee receives the actual hours clocked by the HandPunches, but she can also make changes manually if employees forget to clock in or out.

"The HandPunch has simplified payroll," adds Goupee. "Notably, we have encountered no resistance to the HandPunch from our employees."

About Joe's Stone Crab
This landmark Miami Beach restaurant started out in 1913 as a humble lunch counter known for serving a fine fish sandwich. In 1921, owner Joseph Weiss, a Hungarian-born former New Yorker, was the first person in the area to cook and serve stone crabs to customers. From that time on, stone crabs have been a staple on Miami menus, and Joe's Stone Crab continues to be family owned and operated.
